Getting Your Bathroom Ready for Back to School

by Columbus Bath Design |September 13, 2019 |0 Comments | Bathroom Design, Decoration | ,

bathroom organizationGoing back to school can be a stressful time. There’s so much to prepare in all of your family’s life, like new clothes and school supplies. Your bathroom should remain your oasis of peace in the evenings, and the clean, fresh awakening in the mornings to get your kids up and out! So we’ve compiled our top tips for getting your bathroom ready for back to school time, making the space feel bigger and better organized, and making it easier to manage multiple people in and out in the mornings.

I’ve got so many other things on my plate… how can I start getting my bathroom ready over the summer?

Over the summer, the first thing you can do is clear out anything old or unused from your bathroom — and all over your house! Getting old items out of your hair is the first step to a more stress-free lifestyle, opening up your time from finding things and stressing, to worrying about the more important things in life, like encouraging your children in their schoolwork! Homework, papers, coats, and backpacks might pile up, but make sure you have designated laundry baskets in the bathroom so everyone knows where their items go — whether it be sweaty sports clothes or used towels. This will help you when you’re cleaning and doing the laundry, and will help keep your bathroom clean and tidy throughout the year.

Everything should always have its own place, and everyone should know where that designated place is, meaning that the whole family can help you keep on top of everything. The kids can even have their own designated baskets, toothbrush holders, towels, etc. to help encourage them to learn how to tidy, and keep this habit up throughout the school year! This means it will be quicker to get ready with the kids in the mornings too, as you’ll never have to spend time looking for things, and they’ll be able to find and use their own stuff easily when they’re older.

Get a wicker basket or storage space to hold books to read to your kids in the bath. If you read to or with your children throughout the summer, it will help get them ready for going back to school. Awaken their imagination, and teach them new vocabulary! Kids whose parents read to them are far more likely to succeed in school; bath time might be just the time to do it – if they’re not too excited!

When the craziness of school starts, it’s nice to plan some family time — if they’re young enough, a bath together could do the trick. Some games to play in the bath which are educational are useful too, or invent some games with the toys they already have! Toys could be stored in the bathroom in a bag, so your child can keep it in their room. That way they won’t be distracted with things that remind them of playtime when they’re getting ready for school in the bathroom.

How do I learn from the past when organizing my bathroom for back to school time?

Whenever you’re designing or re-thinking the layout of a room, it’s essential that you think of how you and your family members use it at different times during the week and year. Remember how you felt at back to school time last year, and let it influence your decisions. Did you all crowd around each other last year, stressed out in the mornings, trying to find something? If so, maybe think about clearly labeling your boxes or storage containers with labels in an attractive font.

Maybe getting ready for back to school last year was a really stressful time for you. Remember to take time for yourself and relax. A simple, chic, well-designed bathroom will help you to switch off and recharge your batteries. Make sure you’ve planned in all your appointments, after school meetings, parents’ evenings, clubs and hobbies on a calendar, so you know you have a solid plan for the future. And then relax!

organize bathroomAnd how can I create more bathroom storage to keep our bathroom stress free throughout the year?

For a family bathroom, it’s recommended to get large multipurpose cabinets, as your bathroom has to do so many things for so many people. However, if you’ve already designed your bathroom, and you’re looking to diversify your storage options, there are many extra things you can add to your bathroom to better utilize the space. Think about investing in drawer dividers, extra storage, such as wall or corner shelves, and extra hooks on the walls – maybe one for each member of the family!

So now I have more space, how do I get more of what I really need… time?!

If you’re struggling to fit everyone in the bathroom in the morning, work out a schedule, so everyone gets enough time before you all have to leave. Instead of a stressed, last-minute morning, have a planned, relaxed, fun one! Layout the breakfast table before you sleep, make sure everyone’s towel and supplies are ready in the bathroom, make sure your children’s clothes are clean and laid out in their bedroom to come back to after their morning wash.

The Top 5 Traits Of Every Gorgeous Bathroom

by Columbus Bath Design |July 6, 2018 |0 Comments | Full Bathroom Remodel, Making the Decision to Remodel Your Bathroom, One Day Bathroom Remodel, Tips for the Home | , , , , ,

Whether you are designing a new bathroom or remodeling an existing one, there are a few essential traits you should aim to incorporate. Keep these five things in mind when creating your perfect bathroom:

Superior Lighting

The importance of lighting is something that a lot of people mistakenly overlook when remodeling their bathrooms. Lighting can be natural or artificial and can give the room a whole different feel. Bright, clear lighting is also essential for things like makeup application and hair grooming. Evaluate your space’s lighting needs and choose lighting options accordingly.

A Color Scheme

Picking a color scheme before starting the design process will help narrow down your design options, which can often make decision making much easier. There are a multitude of things you must decide when designing a restroom, including what kind of bathtub/shower, sink, tile, and mirror to choose. Having an overarching color scheme prior to picking our decorations can make picking these items easier and can lead to an overall more cohesively designed space.

Function is Important

While it can be easy to design a bathroom based on trends and fads, the truth is that your focus should lie in functionality. You want to choose sturdy, durable bathroom items that will last.

For example, you may want a trendy bucket-style tub, but also want the functionality that comes with a shower. In some cases, you can have the best of both worlds by installing a bucket-style-bathtub with a shower head on the wall and a glass enclosure to make sure all the water stays contained.

Working with a design team is a great way to merge trendy and functional and will help you think outside the box to get the look you want while also meeting your needs.

Creative Storage

Utilizing different places in your bathroom for hidden storage is another great idea for your bathroom. Take advantage of places that wouldn’t normally be used; under the sink, the back of bathroom doors, etc. By adding a basket or container to these small spaces, you will increase your storage capacity and make your bathroom overall more functional. The key is to get creative!

Every Detail Matters

It may seem like small details do not matter when designing a beautiful restroom, however, the small details are often what bring a whole look together. Our team is invested in your design, all the way down to the hand towels that will be on display. Having a team that is so invested in the process is key to having a fun, exciting, and rewarding experience.

Ways to Brighten Up A Dark Bathroom

by Columbus Bath Design |June 22, 2018 |5 Comments | Bathroom Design, Bathroom Remodeling, Bathroom Remodeling Tips, Bathroom tips | , , , , , , , ,

Your bathroom can be a source of comfort in your home. It is a great place to sit down for a long, hot soak at the end of a long day. To keep the calming and inviting vibe of your bathroom, it is important to find the perfect lighting scheme. Fortunately, today’s homeowners have more options than ever before when it comes to turning any bathroom into a light-filled retreat. A few simple steps are all it takes to create an elegant and modern space:

Painting the Room

One of the best ways to brighten up the bath is by painting it. Paint is easy to use and easy to apply. Think about warm and sunny colors. Shades of yellow and peach are a good choice in a room with less light. Neutral shades like white and grey are always a good choice as well. White is easy to keep clean and exudes light. Make sure to choose paint that is easy to wipe clean. Good choices are high gloss and flat types of paint as they will add additional light.

Consider Your Lighting Options

Natural light is ideal whenever possible. If you have a window in the room, consider the use of frosted glass for privacy that still allows in light. As the sun goes down, artificial lighting is essential. Look for lighting that has a soft and warm feel. A single overhead feature is a good choice. This can be supplemented with other forms of lighting. A lit vanity is a useful thing to help occupants with morning rituals such as putting on makeup and attending to their hair.

The Right Accessories

Another area to think about are the right kind of accessories. Accessories offer yet more opportunity to bring in light. Use mirrors to add additional color and make the room seem bigger. Other surfaces can also be mirrored as well. Think about using a garbage pail in the room along with large metal cabinet fixtures. A set of shiny metal shelving is an ideal option that allows for practical storage. Keep stored linens and shower curtains to lighter colors such as white or pastel shades for an even brighter feel.

Flooring Possibilities

Flooring is another area that can be used bring in more light. Marble flooring is easy to clean and comes in shades of warm white and brown. Marble can also be used for the sink and the shower and bath area. Tiles are another excellent bath flooring choice. Tiles will not be harmed by water or humidity. Consider using tiles in shades of white or lighter colors along the floor and along the walls. Add personality with the use of a custom-made mosaic.

Overall, careful consideration of your bath decor scheme can yield pleasingly warm results. The experts at Columbus Bath Design can help perfect your lighting scheme and more. Contact us today to make your dream bathroom a reality.

Updating Your Bathroom Decor for Spring

by Columbus Bath Design |May 18, 2018 |1 Comments | Bathroom Accessories, Bathroom Design, Bathroom Maintenance, Bathroom Remodeling Tips, Bathroom tips, Columbus Bath Design News, Full Bathroom Remodel, homeowners, Tips for the Home | , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

While you make time for de-cluttering, cleaning and storing winter clothes, welcome spring by sprucing up your bathroom, too! With new décor, colors, and creativity, a dull area becomes a dazzling paradise. Take a peek at our tips below to get a fresh spring look in your bathroom!

A Dash of Color

Nothing says springtime like bright colors. Get rid of black, white, brown, gray, beige, navy blue, and neutral shades and aim for colorful bath decor. Mint, yellow, red, pink, green, and purple shades are great standout colors to incorporate into the room. If changing the wall color to be brighter is too much for you, however, use bright pops of color in the vanity, artwork, or vases to get the same feel.

Get Decorative

Designs and knickknacks add personality to any room. Stripes, shapes, and patterns on towels, shower curtains, window curtains, bathroom accessory sets, mirrors, and artwork enhance that personality. Embrace the shape of the decorative piece (likely a square or rectangle) in multiple areas to create balance in the space. Quirky accent pieces such as artwork, sculptures, or trinkets tell a story through their detailed designs.

Elements of Nature

Updating Your Bathroom Decor for Spring

Flowers, plants, and beach pieces will give a spa-like, natural element of the area. It makes the room feel fresh, intimate, and special. Flowers in vases, potted plants, seashells, and conch shells are examples of different natural elements to add to your space. Accessories made of brick, stone, or wood work well also. You could even add a reclaimed wood wall or shelves to give some texture to the room.

Add Storage Solutions

It’s impossible to have too much storage space in bathrooms. When shelving is too full to store unused items, portable storage space may be your solution. Portable storage items make bath items easy to access while being stylish. Baskets, bath storage racks, shower caddies, and countertop organizers are great storage options. Larger rooms can add small bath cabinets, over the toilet storage, and ladder shelves for more  space.

Mirrors on the Wall

A mirror is a staple in bathrooms for enlarging the room, so updating the mirror with a new frame will make it pop. If you have only space for small mirrors, we recommend adding multiple to create symmetry. You could even replace one large mirror with two smaller ones to enlarge the space and allow for more creativity. Pair mirrors with sunlight and new lighting fixtures, and the mirror-light combo will illuminate the space.

Light it Up

Let light brighten the area through natural and indoor light. You may even want to replace darker shades or curtains with white or see-through ones if you can. Adding bright, new light fixtures help a space appear brighter and refreshed as well. That could even become a fun spring DIY project – painting old light fixtures to give them a new look!

As you can see, paint jobs and renovation overhauls aren’t necessary to turn bathrooms from drab to fab. Swapping home decor to and from the area will have a major impact on the appearance and vibe without spending thousands to achieve a similar result. Even if Ohio’s weather isn’t ready to welcome spring gracefully, welcome it in the bathroom using accessories.

If you’re looking to give your bathroom a complete or partial update besides fresh paint and accessories, contact us today to get started!

When it comes to the priority of home improvement projects, the bathroom runs a pretty close second to the kitchen, and there is a plurality of reasons behind why homeowners choose to take on a bathroom remodel. It could be to modernize an outdated design, make it more energy efficient, or just make it their own. A remodeled bathroom not only adds to the aesthetics of your home but also to its resale value. Renovating your bathroom can add upwards of $10,000 to your home’s resale value, making it a great long-term investment.

Improving Efficiency

Aside from increasing the resale value and improving aesthetics, many homeowners are also seeking ways to improve energy efficiency in their homes. In doing so, they are also beautifying their space, essentially killing two birds with one stone.

Many homeowners have turned to energy-saving lighting fixtures to effectively and efficiently light this space in their homes. We recommend investing in high-efficiency LED lighting instead of using traditional bulbs. Another change you can make is turning to energy-saving fans for ventilation purposes. These fans are not only quieter but are also far more efficient than average fans, saving you money.

Updating Bathroom Can Save You Money

So, other than lighting, what are some of the more common upgrades? Well, believe it or not, it’s countertops; the highly sought-after granite and quartz countertops commonly used in kitchens are becoming a must-have for today’s modern bathroom. Also, when it comes to flooring, as well as walls, many homeowners are choosing porcelain, with many citing the material’s aesthetics as the basis for their choice.

Bathrooms that are designed with practical usage in mind are becoming more common as well. For example, many people are taking built-in bathtubs out to create a combo bathtub/shower wet room, that is handicap accessible. Creating more storage space by adding shelves, cupboards, baskets, and more is becoming common, too. This can increase a home’s resale value by catering to many different types of buyers and making the bathroom easy to use.

Choosing a Contractor

Once you’ve decided on the type of upgrades you would like to make; your next step will be to choose a quality contractor. As with any home improvement project, you will want to find a licensed contractor and have a discussion about labor cost, material cost, and timeframe for completion. Finding a high-quality contractor or service provider can save you money by doing everything right the first time and ensuring your improvements last for years.

As with any major home improvement project, you’re encouraged to get a written estimate and do some comparison shopping to get the best deal possible. Your home is your biggest investment, and you will want to get the most out of your remodeling dollars.

How to Design a Safe Bathroom

by Columbus Bath Design |January 12, 2018 |3 Comments | Bathroom Accessories, Bathroom Design, Bathroom Maintenance, Bathroom Remodeling, Bathroom Remodeling Tips, Bathroom tips, Full Bathroom Remodel, homeowners, Making the Decision to Remodel Your Bathroom, One Day Bathroom Remodel, Tips for the Home, Walk-in Bathtubs | , , , , , , , , , ,

Thousands of people are injured in bathroom accidents each year.  Fortunately, many of these incidents are preventable if homeowners follow a few simple safety tips. January is National Bath Safety Month, and a good time for homeowners to look for tips on how to design a safe bathroom. Below are some helpful suggestions on how to prevent bathtub injuries and avoid slipping while taking a bath or shower.

Install Safety Accessories

Installing specific accessories can make your bathroom significantly safer than it is currently. For example, grab bars are an excellent addition to any bathroom. Many falls occur simply because there is no practical area to grab onto if you lose your balance or trip. Grab bars can be installed on the sides of the shower, at its entrance, or in both areas, depending on the design of your bathroom. Such bars also make it easier to navigate the shower overall, as they provide a place to grip when stepping in and out of the bath.

bath safety bars

Control Water Temperature

Many people have quickly entered a shower or bathtub assuming that the water is at the appropriate temperature, only to discover it is much hotter than desired. This sudden exposure to hot water may cause you to become injured by a burn or by falling if you attempt to hastily exit the shower. Therefore, make sure you have a way to control water temperature or check to make it is a desirable temperature before entering. There are devices available that monitor and control the temperature of the water and prevents it from exceeding a certain degree, so this may be an option for you if you frequently have water temperature concerns.

Cover Sharp Edges

If your shower has doors, glass fixtures, or similar components, you should make an effort to cover sharp edges in order to avoid cuts, scrapes, and other injuries. This is an important aspect of bath safety, as clothing is not present to provide extra protection when bathing or showering. In addition to covering sharp edges in showers and baths, be sure to cover them on counters as well.

Senior Bath Safety

If you or other residents of your home are elderly, you should consider the addition of accessories such as a shower seat and a hand-held shower head. Such devices make it easier and safer for seniors to bathe or shower, particularly those who have balance issues or take medications that may cause dizziness or an unsteady gait.

In certain cases, it may be necessary to plan a remodeling project in order to design a safe bath for you and your loved ones. When remodeling, your contractor can create a floor plan with safety in mind. This way, you can avoid slipping, control water temperature, cover sharp edges, and have the contractor install accessories such as grab bars and seats during the bathroom remodeling process.

Although it is not always possible to completely prevent every minor accident, designing a safe bathroom is a great place to begin. Contact Columbus Bath Design to receive a free estimate and talk to a professional about making your bathroom a safer place.

The start of a new year is the perfect time to plan for updates and remodeling projects around your home. Your budget may be holding you back, but with proper planning, you can save what you need to give your bathroom a fresh look. Here are some tips for saving money so you can afford a beautiful new bathroom in 2018:

Cut Back on Expenses

One of the first things you need to do is look at the areas where you can cut back and spend less. Take an honest look at your weekly and monthly expenses, and see where you can make cuts. By reducing your expenses, you will have more leftover to put into your savings.

Create a Dedicated Savings Fund

In order to ensure your savings won’t be spent on other things, you should create a dedicated savings fund. You may want to open a new account with your bank that is connected to your checking account. This will allow you to easily transfer money to save for the project. You’ll be able to watch the savings build up over time, and keep better track of your progress.

Prioritize Spending

If a home renovation project is a priority for you, then you will need to reduce your spending on other things. Make a list of your top priorities and allocate money toward them. A bathroom remodel is an excellent priority because it will add value to your home and give you an updated space to use and enjoy every day.

Make a Budget

If you don’t already have a budget, now would be a great time to make one. A budget allows you to see your monthly expenses and to track where your money is being spent. You can also determine how much money you would like to spend on a new bathroom, and inhibits you to save more since you can easily identify the categories where costs can be reduced.

Plan the Project

Proper planning is one of the keys to keeping the costs of a remodel in check. As you start saving for a new bathroom, you can begin to plan it out. Think about what you would like to have in the space and what elements may need to be replaced. We offer free in-home estimates, so one of our bathroom remodeling experts will be able to tell you exactly how much you need to save. By planning ahead, you can have realistic expectations about the total cost and the completion of the remodel.

5 Ways to Add Personality to Your Bathroom

by Columbus Bath Design |October 27, 2017 |0 Comments | Bathroom Design, Bathroom tips, Making the Decision to Remodel Your Bathroom, Tips for the Home | , , , , ,

White Bathroom Although it may be a smaller space in the home, your bathroom’s design shouldn’t be overlooked. This room gives you an opportunity to showcase your style with simple touches. By decorating your bathroom, you can make it your own. Here are 5 ways to add personality to your bathroom:

Paint Color

Be bold and choose a color that you truly love. You can always find accessories that will complement or match the color on the walls. Don’t be afraid to opt for a color that you wouldn’t use in another room in the home.

Decorations

From framed artwork to functional baskets, you can add decorations to the bathroom for a stylish look. Consider changing out your decor each season. Hand towels, the shower curtain, and simple accessories on countertops are easy ways to dress up the decor.

Try Wallpaper

If you want to make a big splash on one wall, consider wallpaper. There are so many beautiful designs to choose from today, and they can give you an elegant, modern look. Try using it on the wall with vanity to create a focal point in the bathroom.

Hardware and Fixtures

Instead of using standard hardware and fixtures, opt for something unique. You can find a wide variety of bathroom fixtures online, so there’s no need to settle for something basic and boring. From the showerhead to drawer pulls, select designs that truly speak to your personal style.

Tile Patterns and Colors

Rather than settling for plain tiles laid out in a basic pattern, consider trying something colorful and creative. You can create a unique look with detailed tile work. Even something as simple as a single row of colored tiles added into a basic subway design can bring an original look to the room.

Bathrooms don’t have to be basic and boring. They’re a smaller room in the home that can have a big personality. With these ideas, you’ll be able to breathe new life into an ordinary bathroom and show off your personality in the space.
