Should I Stay During Renovations?

by Columbus Bath Design |October 1, 2021 |0 Comments | Bathroom Remodeling, One Day Bathroom Remodel |

Although many people leave during home renovations, this step is not always necessary. Some may prefer staying in their comfortable house, keeping up their old routines. Others may want to get away from the noise, mess, and disruption of a big bathroom renovation.

You’ll need to make a plan for where you’re staying, whether you remain in your home or go. This may also factor into your timeline and renovation budget. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of each option:

bathroom renovation blueprints

Should You Stay?

Staying at home is in many ways the easier option. You won’t need to research in-budget accommodations or ask your relatives for a favor. However, don’t underestimate how busy your house may become during a major remodel.

Pros:

You will have easy access to all of your work equipment, clothes, etc.

You’ll stay in the loop down to the minute on how this remodel is proceeding.

If a problem pops up, you’ll be one of the first people to know about it.

Some kids and pets may do better at home and with their regular routine.

You won’t have to rent a hotel room during the interim.

By watching the remodel, step by step, you can make last-minute changes as needed.

For very minor remodeling jobs such as swapping out hardware or repainting a wall, renting a hotel room may be overkill.

Cons:

If they’re re-sanding or tearing out the walls, you can expect a lot of noise and dust.

The noise during working hours could interfere with distance learning and working from home.

Those contractors may need to access a room you use frequently, such as a kitchen or bathroom.

Painting and other activities can release fumes. You may be asked to leave the house for a time anyway, to let these chemicals dissipate.

Pets may get agitated by the stream of strangers in the home.

If the renovation takes place over many days, this may create a big disruption in your daily routine.

If you’re getting the bathroom renovated and only have one bathroom, it may not be practical to stay.

Should You Go?

Where can you go during a renovation? Some people rent a hotel room, either on a budget or as a splurge. Often, this may be close to their home being renovated or conveniently near work. Other people stay with friends and family, go somewhere exotic, or rent an RV.

Pros:

You and your household won’t have to deal with strangers in your space, noise, dust, etc.

Your rental room may have advantages like a gym, high-speed internet, or an easy walk to work or school.

A change of location can break you out of a rut. You may actually get more distance education or video conferencing work done in a new place.

Renovations may run longer than expected. You might end up having to get a hotel anyway.

A trusted contractor can take care of minor issues and decisions, freeing up your time.

You won’t risk any incidental contact with paint fumes or other irritants.

The work may be done faster without your family being constantly underfoot.

Cons:

This can be a significant expense, especially if you travel or stay somewhere luxurious.

The place you find that’s on-budget may not be anywhere near your work, loved ones, etc.

If you’re staying with family and the project runs long, you may overstay your welcome.

You’ll miss out on the comfort and amenities of home.

Over the long run, it may be very inconvenient to keep returning to your home during renovation to pick up clean clothes or important documents.

There’s going to be a time delay between a problem popping up and you hearing about it. This is especially true if you go on vacation somewhere.

Work With Your Contractor

If you have specific concerns, bring them up with your contractor during the planning stages. Do you really want to stay at home during the renovation? They may be able to shuffle the schedule around to make this possible.

In some cases, your contractor may be able to work on just one room at a time. This leaves space for your family to use. They may also tackle high-use areas like the kitchen during the day when everyone’s out.

Meanwhile, what if your budget is strained by the additional expense of staying somewhere else? Your contractor may have a few ideas for trimming the renovation costs. These might include:

  • delaying less-vital parts of the renovation
  • accelerating the schedule so you need to spend less time away from home
  • sourcing more budget-friendly materials and appliances

Refresh Your Home with a Remodel

by Columbus Bath Design |March 27, 2020 |29 Comments | Bathroom Remodeling | , , , ,

bathroom remodelThe effects of remodeling your bathroom go far beyond simply making it look more appealing.

Research from the National Association of Realtors confirms that more than 75 percent of homeowners who remodel their bathrooms want to be in their homes more. More than 65 percent say they actually have more fun after a bathroom remodeling project.

But, wait…there’s more!

The data also shows that, if done properly, at least 50 percent of your investment is recouped with the increase in your home’s value.

How extensive are bathroom remodels?

One of the beauties of deciding on a bathroom remodeling project is that it can be as little or expansive as you wish. You can gut the entire room and start again, or merely add a few updated features.

Here are some of the most popular bathroom remodeling projects that pack the most punch.

  • Replacing the vanity: Many homeowners underestimate the value of a vanity. In addition to housing the sink, your vanity provides storage space and sets the stage for the rest of your bathroom. When not installed properly, it can be easy for mold to attach itself to your vanity, which can lead to cabinet damage as well.

You’ve got a host of options for vanity replacements. For example, open vanities give your bathroom an uncluttered appeal. If you’re more into the antique look, we can help you use repurposed furniture that gives a fun take on a traditional look. If your budget allows, we can also help you with a custom-designed vanity.

  • New flooring: In the bathroom, what’s underneath your feet is definitely important. Choosing to replace the flooring is often one of the least expensive – yet most impactful – remodeling options for your bathroom.

Here at Columbus Bath Design, we recommend using tile, vinyl or wood. Another good contemporary option is to include a radiant-heat mat beneath the flooring for a more comfortable feeling year-round.

  • Replacing your tub or shower: Whether you want a deep tub for a soaking bubble bath or a walk-in shower (which is very trendy these days), there are benefits to both. Some people decide to ditch their tub altogether because they use it so sparingly. Others wouldn’t dream of doing such a thing.

We’ve also noticed a growing need for walk-in tubs. Even though many independent seniors prefer this, it can be a good choice for practically anyone. Walk-in tubs are ideal for homeowners with mobility problems.

  • Improved lighting: This is an often-overlooked detail for most bathrooms in general. With today’s technology, though, the lighting scheme in your bathroom can be customized to your tastes. In addition to selecting the light color, newer features give the ability to adjust the level of the light intensity.

How disruptive is the bathroom remodeling process?

This is where the decision to hire Columbus Bath Design really pays off. In most cases, we’re able to have your bathroom remodeling project completed in just one day. If the project is extensive, the workload may spill over into a second day, but that’s not the norm.

bathroom remodelHere’s how we like to work:

  1. Once you make contact with us, our design experts will talk with you about your needs and ideas for your remodeling project.
  2. With you, we begin exploring options that best suit your ideas. We’ll talk about the price range for each object so that there’s no sticker shock down the line.
  3. Once everyone is on the same page, we’ll provide you with an estimate of the project costs. At this stage, we can also work with you in tweaking aspects of the project to make sure it fits your budget.
  4. We then order the materials and select a day and time for the installation.
  5. Before the installation, our installers will visit your home to size-up the situation and identify any potential obstacles that could get in the way. Doing this means there’s no wasted time on the day of installation.
  6. Your installation will be handled by one or two installers who will remain on the job until it’s finished. If the project does stretch into another day, the same installers will return to finish the job.

Keep in mind that at any point in the project you can make adjustments. We’re prepared for this and can usually make changes on the fly.

Tips for Planning Your Dream Bathroom

by Columbus Bath Design |October 24, 2019 |0 Comments | Bathroom Remodeling | , ,

dream bathroomEverybody deserves their own little slice of heaven. For many people, there’s nothing quite like having a beautifully revamped dream bathroom where they can relax, unwind, and leave their worries behind. If you’re interested in updating or totally remodeling your bathroom, then you’ve come to the right place. Whether your style is modern and chic or comfortable and cozy—Columbus Bath Design can help you design the bathroom you’ve always wanted.

Dream Bathroom Key Considerations

There are a few key areas you should focus on if you’re interested in a bathroom update or remodel. We understand the process can feel complex. That’s why we’re here to help you every step of the way. Let’s kick this off by starting with some of the key considerations you should keep in mind as you move throughout the design process.

Customization

First, consider what your dream bathroom looks like to you. This part of the process requires a little creativity. You’ll want to start by considering the ambiance you would like to create. Perhaps you want a spa-like feel, or you prefer something simpler that is more geared toward functionality. Even if you aren’t sure of the proper design terms, you can start by looking at pictures and discussing what you like or don’t like about each design aspect. As you make these decisions, you’ll quickly realize that you have a design concept that you prefer.

The Basics of Getting Your Dream Bathroom

Starting a bathroom remodel can feel overwhelming. After all, there are so many choices! However, it’s best to start with the basics. You can narrow in on your design by simply beginning with the color scheme. While the color of the space may feel like a fundamental decision (and it is!), it can go a long way in helping you narrow down which fixtures and décor will enhance the space. Perhaps you prefer something bright and welcoming, or maybe you like something calm and tranquil—that one decision about color will get you on the path toward designing your perfect bathroom!

Identify the Trends

While it’s certainly essential to understand that trends come and go, you also want to be aware of the hottest designs in the market. Right now, we see a lot of combinational bathrooms with soaker tubs and walk-in showers. People want the best of both worlds, so often, if there is enough space for both, then that is what we do!

There are primarily two broad design choices that people lean towards: minimal or functional. Of course, there is a lot of room for customization in each category. Minimal designs focus more on keeping the space open and modern. Functional designs tend to be more focused on how space can be easily used and comfortable.

Products and accessories can go a long way towards bringing a design scheme to life. The fun part of the design process is when we bring together tile choice, lighting fixtures, faucets, and all the other finer details. The best part about it? You can take things you like from different designs and bring them together in a way that makes sense for you and your space.

Personalizing Your Dream Bathroom

The critical thing to remember is that this space should be designed for the people who live in it. While trends can certainly be a great point of inspiration, the process is all about personalizing the space so that you feel the most comfortable in it.

The hottest trend in any kind of design project these days is just how much it focuses on the personality of the customer. Your preferences should be apparent through every step of the process. While we can help you hone in on colors and products that will make the most of the space, your style should be at the forefront of the design. We will help you get there!

Details, Details, Details

No matter the design you choose, make sure that functionality is part of it. You’ll want to be sure that your space has plenty of usable storage and that the flow of the room makes sense. Using different types of baskets, totes, or bins can really bring the space together.

Everything from tub size to faucet design can play a critical role in how you use your bathroom. Giving some thought to the finer details can go a long way in ensuring that the space is the most comfortable and useful space possible.

4 Ways to Create More Bathroom Space for the Whole Family

by Columbus Bath Design |August 23, 2019 |16 Comments | Bathroom Design | , , ,

It can be hard to decide on a design that works for all members of your family, not to mention any guests or visitors you may have along the way! A great family bathroom evolves and grows too alongside your family. Therefore, from the beginning of your redecoration process, you need a design that can adapt. All fittings in the family bathroom should be low maintenance and durable. You need the right fittings, fixtures, and finishes — and then your bathroom can truly adapt for a growing family, all of your guests, and your personal needs. We at Columbus Bath Design can help you find a simple design with lots of storage that’s elegant but also durable. We’ll help you create a perfect bathroom for both play-time in the bath with your young ones, and an oasis of peace for you when you want a little peace and quiet.

So how can I create more space for all of the members of my family?

1) How do I choose the right in-built storage for my family’s needs?

We recommend that when designing your bathroom for a family, including a large amount of storage space. Maybe choose a combination unit with plenty of built-in storage. You could also add wall hanging units, corner shelves, storage at the end of the bath or niches in the walls of showers to give you that extra storage where none existed before — keeping your bathroom streamlined and making it feel bigger!

2) How can I use extra storage in an attractive, cohesive way?

Firstly, not all of the possessions we keep in our bathroom actually need to be here. Think about stealing space in other parts of your house — for example, bedrooms, storage cupboards, etc – for anything you don’t definitely need to store in the bathroom. This could include duplicates, medicines or spare towels.

Here are some chicer, tried and tested ways to bring extra storage space to your bathroom:

Multiple hanging bars or racks, with some, placed lower down so your kids can reach them. This is also a great way to introduce tidying to your family. If each person knows where everything goes and can access it, they’re more likely to be interested in the tidying process and help you in the future. It’s a win-win! You could think about adding these extra hooks on the inside of the bathroom door, to keep the space feeling uncluttered and minimalist.

Also, think about investing in a stool so that the kids can reach everything they need like the sink, getting into the bath or reaching higher up cabinets. You could get a stool that folds away, but if you’re worried about it not being stable enough, think about creating enough storage in your under-sink cabinet that you can store a stool there.

3) How can space be organized for all members of the family?

A great way to make your bathroom work for the whole family is to give each member their own area. This leaves the tidying responsibility to them, and wipes out the possibility of anyone fighting over whose towel is theirs! Here are some ways you can divide up your bathroom for all your family members:

  • Buy some drawstring bags for your kid’s toys. These could be stored on a suction cup on the wall of the bath, or stored in their room, or on one of their designated hooks. If you’re looking to buy a bag, find one that’s made out of mesh, or a wire basket. This allows your toys to dry off properly.
  • Giving your kids a separate toothbrush holder can avoid confusion. If you make their container a fun, child-friendly one, like a cup with their favorite cartoon, they might even find bathroom time more fun and be more willing and excited to brush their teeth!
  • Color code your bathroom. Give the generations in your family a separate color or each family member a different color. This will add a splash of color to your bathroom, while still being paired back and minimalist, and will help everyone to remember which items are theirs. This can stop any fights over belongings and make things easier to find for you and all the family. You can also color-code your accessories, like face towels or toothbrushes, with a ribbon. If you’d like to keep your bathroom simplistic and opt for white towels, you could add a color-coded ribbon to these too. White towels, despite what you might think, are also easier to clean — they can always be bleached, if they get dirty! You could even color-code your boxes or storage units or wicker bins.

4) How can I make the bathroom more fun for the whole family?

Lots of people might think that replacing a bath with a shower is the perfect way to save space in a family bathroom. But multiple members of the family can have a bath, it’s fun, and can bring everyone together. It also means the house will be easier to re-sell if you’re considering that in the future. If you’re tight on space you could have a shower over the bath for the best of both worlds. Or if you’re working with even less space, think of ways to make the shower more fun, including toys and games for the little ones.

Come and visit us at Columbus Bath Design to find the perfect bathroom to suit all of your needs, or call us on this number: (614) 907-4558.

How A Remodeled Bathroom Can Increase Your Property Value

by Columbus Bath Design |October 21, 2016 |1 Comments | Bathroom Remodeling, homeowners |

shutterstock_318883664A homeowner often decides to make improvements and upgrades to his or her house in order to increase its appeal. By targeting certain rooms, you may be able to raise the value of your property a great deal. Your bathroom is smart place to attempt a remodel.

Why Remodel a Bathroom?

Although many homeowners fail to realize the value of a bathroom makeover, it is a task that will attract potential buyers. Even though a bathroom is not the focal point of a home, it still must be in top condition. No one wants an outdated space that is unappealing.

A bathroom can be transformed into a relaxing haven where a person wants to unwind in a hot bath at the end of a busy day. If your bathroom offers a spa-like atmosphere, it is sure to increase the value of your home.

How to Remodel a Bathroom:

To obtain the most bang for your buck, there are a few features that must be addressed. To begin, it is wise to invest in a new shower surround or a whirlpool tub. Most people enjoy stepping into tubs with massaging jets or beautiful showers. On the wall, you may consider hanging an elegant mirror instead of an old medicine cabinet. Adding a sink with a sleek vanity is smart as well.

Storage in a bathroom is key. If you do not have ample space under the sink, you may wish to incorporate a shelving unit into the wall. To bring a touch of color to the room, this is a smart place to house brightly colored towels. Since space is limited, it may be best to install recessed lighting as well.

If you want to increase your home’s property value, you should consider a bathroom remodel. For some great tips and ideas, Columbus Bath Design is the place to turn. Here, the experts will help you remain within your budget and create a gorgeous and enticing space.

12973174_10153745669854811_6552405828670690821_oAs new homeowners, the bathroom remodeling project you decide to undertake must make sense for your home. Additionally, it should be visually appealing, maximize functionality and reflect your personal style. Doing so will ensure that you capitalize on adding value to your property.

Even new homeowners with a limited budget can successfully update their bathrooms to enhance comfort, style and property value. There are incredible selections of fixtures, fittings and accessories to suit every budget and design preference. You can also use the expertise of design professionals to help you achieve the best results.

Whether you have decided to totally gut the bathroom or make impactful changes around the space, these tips can help you to get more bang for your buck:

Bathtub. Replacing the bathtub with a more modern and functional version is a remarkable way of updating the space. For example, upgrading to a whirlpool tub is a great method of transforming your bathroom into a spa-like retreat. However, if changing the bathtub is not currently in the budget, refinishing the tub or just updating the fixtures can have a major impact on the look and function of the space.

Wall Color. The color you choose for your bathroom walls can make a significant difference in the overall look and feel of the space. You can go bold to add vibrancy or choose soothing tones to set a more relaxing atmosphere. Wall color is among the least expensive methods that can be used to make a considerable impact.

Flooring. Upgrading the flooring in your bathroom is another great way of improving its value and aesthetic appeal. Whether putting in a new floor or having the existing floor professionally cleaned, upgrading your floors will be a remarkable update.

These are just some of the things new homeowners can consider for their bathroom remodeling project.

Many people contemplate bathroom remodeling projects but are filled with hesitation. They are afraid of the expenses and inconveniences. Working with Columbus Bath Design, you can experience a bathroom transformation that fits your budget and is completed quickly. Here are some ways Columbus Bath Design can breathe new life into your bathroom.

Acrylic Wall Systems. An acrylic bath system can increase you home’s value. Instead of the time and mess associated with ripping out an old tub, installing a wall system is much easier. The price is much more affordable as well. Each system is custom-fit and is placed over an existing shower and tub. Most units are extremely durable and last a long time. Without grout lines, they are less likely to accumulate mold.

New Shower Doors. Instead of using a moldy and dated shower curtain, many homeowners are installing frameless shower doors. They do not contain bulky metal edges, so they provide a clean appearance to the room. If your shower wall is filled with intricate tiles, frameless shower doors will allow their beauty to shine through. They make the space seem larger as well.

Luxury Tubs. A bathroom should be a place where you can relax in a warm bath after a long day. Columbus Bath Design has a wide assortment of soakers and walk-in tubs. When you want to feel like you are visiting a spa, installing a tub with massage jets is a welcome idea. When you are physically unable to enter and exit a deep tub, a walk-in model will be a wise choice. No matter the tub selection, your space will be transformed.

Bathroom Accessories. The easiest way to transform your bathroom is with the proper accessories. De-cluttering the space will increase the room’s appeal and adding safety features will offer peace of mind. You can select a caddy to hold your soap, shampoo, and other items or install a grab bar that helps prevent slipping in your shower.

A Tub To Shower Conversion 101

by Columbus Bath Design |September 10, 2015 |23 Comments | Bathroom Maintenance, Bathroom Remodeling Tips, Bathtub Conversions, Uncategorized | , , ,

bathroom design and remodeling trendsMany homeowners are eliminating at least one bathtub in their homes. Although tubs are luxurious places to relax, many people find that taking showers fits better into their daily lives. Stepping over outdated tub walls is another consideration, especially as one ages. If this sounds like your situation, a tub to shower conversion may be the type of renovation you need.

Converting your tub into a shower takes careful consideration before you begin the process. For most bathrooms, a dream shower can fit into the footprint of an outdated bathtub. Here are some remodel tips to ensure that you get the shower conversion that’s right for your space.

Measure everything precisely down to 1/8 inch and write it down. Most tubes are 60 inches wide, an ideal width, but depth can be a problem. You’ll need at least 32 to 34 inches from the wall to the shower door. You’ll also need a finished ceiling height of at least 80 inches and a minimum interior space of 30 by 30 inches. If the toilet is located adjacent, make sure there will be a minimum of 15 inches between it and the location of the shower door. Consider a doorless shower if you don’t have the minimum clearance.

Once you have determined the existing space is large enough, four other elements will need to be addressed: plumbing, shower pan, wallboard and tile.

Existing water feeds will need reconfiguration to support a new diverter and trim. Tub drains are generally only 1-1/2 inches in diameter while most building codes require shower drains to be 2 inches, thus requiring new piping. The shower pan must be poured to achieve adequate sloping to the drain. Installation of a seamless waterproof membrane between the pan and floor tile is recommended to prevent seepage from to the floor below.

Crucial bathroom tips in a tub to shower conversion involve the wallboard and tile. Although one-piece acrylic systems are touted by some as the ideal solution, these are often placed over existing walls, which can harbor mold and eventual rot. Make sure that mold-resistant backer board is placed behind tile, which needs to be installed at least to the height of the showerhead. The joints between all tiles will need grouting and sealing to further retard mold growth behind the tile.
